Using the space safely.
These are the conditions of entry and use for the sauna, warm soaks and cold plunge at Solspring. They exist so the space stays safe, calm and enjoyable for everyone in it.
The short version
- Heat and cold carry real risk. You are responsible for knowing whether your body can tolerate them, and for stopping when it tells you to.
- Children under 11 cannot enter. Young people aged 11 to 16 must be actively supervised by an adult at all times.
- Talk to your doctor first if you have a heart, circulatory or blood pressure condition, epilepsy, diabetes, are pregnant, or have a history of fainting or dizziness.
- No alcohol or drugs before or during a session. We can refuse entry to anyone who appears impaired.
- Shower before the pools, sit on a towel in the sauna, and stay hydrated throughout.
Your health and your own limits
Use of the sauna, warm soaks and cold plunge at Solspring is undertaken at your own risk. It is your responsibility to make sure you are physically and medically able to tolerate exposure to hot and cold temperatures before you use the facilities.
We strongly advise you to speak with your doctor or health advisor before using the facilities, particularly if you have any pre-existing health condition or concern. If you are in doubt, do not use the facilities.
Conditions affected by heat and cold
The sauna, warm soaks and cold plunge should not be used where a medical condition may be adversely affected by heat or cold exposure. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Heart or circulatory conditions
- Blood pressure issues
- Epilepsy
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- A history of fainting or dizziness
Seek medical advice if any of these apply to you, or if you are unsure whether taking part is suitable.
Age and supervision
- Children under the age of 11 are not permitted to enter the space.
- Young people aged 11 to 16 must be accompanied and actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times.
Active supervision means staying close enough to assist immediately and keeping the young person within sight. Young people must never be left unattended in the sauna, the pools or anywhere else in the facility.
In the sauna
- A parent or caregiver must enter and leave the sauna with the young person.
- Young people should sit on the bottom bench only.
- Sauna exposure should be short and gentle.
- If the young person wants to leave, the supervising adult leaves with them. They must never remain in the sauna without an adult.
In the water
- Young people must not enter the pools if they have had diarrhoea or vomiting within the last 14 days.
- They must not enter with open wounds, school sores, skin infections, weeping sores, a contagious illness or symptoms of sickness.
- Anyone who is not fully toilet-trained must not enter the pools.
- No diving, jumping, running or rough play.
Using the sauna
- Keep sauna rounds moderate and take regular cooling and hydration breaks.
- For your safety, we advise not remaining in the sauna longer than 15 minutes per round. Prolonged exposure can cause dehydration, overheating and other health risks.
- Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, nauseous, breathless or unwell.
- Do not touch the sauna heater or interfere with its controls.
- Do not pour water, essential oils or anything else onto the heater unless a Solspring host or guide has specifically said you may.
- Always sit on a towel. Remove metal or hanging jewellery before entering.
Using the pools
- Maximum four people per pool.
- Enter and exit slowly and carefully. Wet surfaces are slippery.
- Shower thoroughly before entering any pool.
- No running, diving, jumping, rough play, breath-holding competitions or prolonged underwater submersion.
- Cold plunge exposure should be short and within your own tolerance — generally no longer than one to two minutes per immersion.
- Exit immediately if you experience dizziness, numbness, chest pain, breathlessness, distress, faintness or disorientation.
There is no pressure to stay in heat or cold for any length of time. Nothing in a session is compulsory.
Essential oils
Essential oils are used only during approved guided sauna sessions, by trained facilitators, using Solspring-approved oils. Guests must not bring or apply their own essential oils, fragrances or other substances to the sauna, the heater or the pools.
Alcohol, drugs and smoking
Alcohol and recreational drugs are not permitted in the sauna, the pools or the cold plunge, and we advise against drinking alcohol before a session. Solspring reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone who appears intoxicated or impaired. Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere within the Solspring space.
Hydration
Stay well hydrated before, during and after your session. Dehydration increases the risk of dizziness, overheating, fainting and other adverse effects. Bring a water bottle.
Hot surfaces and slippery ground
Avoid direct contact with the fireplace, the sauna heater and other hot surfaces — they can cause severe burns. Take care when passing these areas, allow room for safe movement and be mindful of others nearby.
While Solspring takes reasonable steps to maintain safe conditions, you are responsible for staying aware of your surroundings and moving with care on wet ground.
Respect for the space
- No glass in the sauna, pools or wet areas. No running.
- Do not sit, stand or climb on pool edges or safety barriers.
- Photographing or filming another person requires their permission. Phones stay with your stored belongings.
- Please arrive clean and free from lotions, oils, perfumes and fake tan where you can — it protects the water quality for everyone.
- Respect Solspring property, equipment, staff and other guests.
- Follow Solspring signage and staff safety instructions at all times.
Accidents and injuries
Accidental and personal injury in New Zealand is covered by the Accident Compensation Act 2001. You must comply with all health and safety directions given by Solspring. Any accident, injury, near miss, damage, fault or spill must be reported to Solspring staff as soon as possible.
Your belongings
Personal belongings are left at your own risk. To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify Solspring, its operators and its agents against claims, losses, damages, costs or expenses arising from your use of the facilities or your breach of these terms.
Admission
Solspring reserves the right to refuse admission, stop an activity, restrict access to a facility or ask a guest to leave where their presence or participation poses a health or safety risk, where they appear intoxicated or impaired, or where safety conditions are not being followed. Refunds are not provided to anyone refused entry on these grounds.
Bookings and cancellations
If you can no longer attend, please let us know as early as possible so we can offer your place to someone else. Cancellations must be made at least 6 hours before your session to receive a credit. Cancellations within 6 hours of the session start time are non-refundable and will not be credited.
Cancellation, transfer and credit conditions may vary depending on the session, event or pass purchased. Please refer to the terms shown during booking, or contact us for help.
Waiver and acknowledgement
Before your first session you will be asked to read and agree to the Solspring guest information and waiver. By agreeing, you confirm that you have read and understood these terms, that you understand sauna, hot-water and cold-water exposure involve inherent risks, that you choose to take part within your own limits, and that you are responsible for ensuring you are able to tolerate heat and cold exposure.
If you are supervising a young person, you confirm you are responsible for actively supervising them and following the age and supervision requirements above.
To the fullest extent permitted by New Zealand law, Solspring is not responsible for personal injury, illness or loss arising from use of these facilities, except where that liability cannot be excluded by law. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any right or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under New Zealand law, including under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986 where those apply.
